The Cueva de los Verdes (the green cave) is situated in the northeast, in the municipality of Haría. It is in the lava fields (malpaís: rough and barren landscape) originated by the eruption of the Corona volcano about 5000 years ago.
During the volcanic eruption the lava on the surface got cold quickly but inside the lava continued flowing faster originating a lava tube with about 7 km of length. It starts in Corona Volcano and enter about 1500 meter into the sea, it is known as Túnel de la Atlántida. In some parts of the tunnel the top layer or the “roof of the cave” has collapsed, these holes are known as Jameos, and the most famous is Jameos del Agua. The measures of the Cueva de los Verdes are amazing. Inside it is possible to find parts of about 19 meters of in height and 15 meter wide and others narrow parts.
The history said that the Cueva de los Verdes was a refugee for the indigenous and inhabitants of Lanzarote in the face of wave of Berber pirates and slave hunters during the 17th century. This place of lava fields were difficult to access and thanks to the jameos the inhabitants of the island could move in the cave without being seeing. The origin of the name of the cave is not clear because some texts say that it is originated in the green color of the cave due to different mosses and other texts say that the name comes from a family called Los Verdes that lived in the cave.

In 1964 began the works in the cave to set it up and could be visited. Inside of the cave is possible to see lava stalactites, various lines that show us the different levels of lava or the little auditorium. The colors and forms that the cave show us are spectaculars and in conjunction with the careful lightin all contribute to make this place one of the essential places to visit in Lanzarote. It is a special place that keeps a secret inside… If you have not visited it yet do not hesitate. It is a worthwhile place!
Also, in the cave is the main core of the geodynamic station of Lanzarote that, among other things, is in charge of the application of geodesic and geophysical methods in the investigation of the island as a possible active or potentially active zone.
As you can see, in this special place should have happened great histories, some of them could be true and others we never known its truthfulness… The following one has been interesting for us and we want to share with you: the caretaker of Cueva de los Verdes.
