Wine Run Lanzarote: a race among vineyards

WINE RUN LANZAROTE

This year is the tenth edition of the Wine Run Lanzarote. Over the years, the wine race has been rooted, becoming one of the most expected event of the year.

The event starts, as every year, with the Traditional Cuisine Festival in which we could taste the excelent products of the island. This year it is celebrated from the 16 to the 17 of June.

The race has different categories:

Long race of 23 kilometres
Short race of 12 kilometres
Walk of 12 kilometres

As every year, the event is aimed at solidarity: part of the earnings will assign to the proyect ‘Save la Geria.

And why they choose this proyect?

The Wine Run Lanzaroteis celebrated in the protected landscape of La Geria. In this place, the peasants ingenuity, who looked for a future after the volcanic eruptions, is exposed to all. The peasants had to face not only the eruptions, but also to the low rainfal and the prevailing wind in the island. They dug holes of two metres looking for sand, to protect the cultivation from the wind and also, to take advantage of the humidity fallen at night that the sand keeps.

In those place where there is not depth, the peasants took the rocks extracted from the floor and did shelters or little walls to protect the vine from the wind

There is no doubt, that the landscape formed by these structures has made this area of Lanzarote a unique place of the world. It is nos possible to find in other place of the world a vine plantation like this. And maybe, in combination with the weather and the good work of the peasants, it could be one of the main important factors that has contributed in the wine-making prestige of the island. In that way, the viticulturist has get a wine with a unique flavor, beeing rewarded year after year with importan awards at both national and international levels.

With this proyect, the Cabildo (the Lanzarote Council) promote economical, cultural, envioronmental and tourist sustainability of La Geria landscape. The Cabildo enhace the value of the vine cultivation and throught the promotion of the wine tourism and the hikking, recovering traditional paths and demoted landscapes, among other things.

The participants in the Wine Run Lanzarote will have the opportunity to croos this idilic landscape, and also they could taste the wine of the different wineries durong the route.
