Route through the north of Lanzarote: Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Rio

On this fantastic day we will discover all the secrets of such marvellous places as Jameos del Agua or Mirador del Río.

Route itinerary through the north of Lanzarote

After picking up the hikers at the different meeting points, we will travel north by bus, passing through the village of Teguise. We will have a panoramic view where we can admire the church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, its cobbled streets, the white houses in traditional Canarian style and numerous historic buildings.

Afterwards, crossing the village of Los Valles, we continue our tour through the north of Lanzarote heading towards the town of Haría, where we will observe a wonderful view of a beautiful palm grove, known as “El Valle de las Mil Palmeras” (The Valley of the Thousand Palm Trees).

This area of the island owes its name to the abundance of palm trees, creating one of the greenest areas of Lanzarote. Haría is one of the best preserved municipalities on the island and although it has never been counted how many palm trees there are, between them all they make up a very picturesque image worthy of a postcard and a visit.

Visit the works of César Manrique

Continuing through the villages of Máguez and Yé, we reach the Mirador del Río. This architectural creation by César Manrique is characterised by its harmonious integration with the natural surroundings and is located at an altitude of 474 metres. The building is located on the steep slope of the Risco de Famara, from where we can see the island of La Graciosa and the “river” that separates it from Lanzarote.  We will admire the rest of the Chinijo Archipelago from a spectacular perspective.

From there, bordering the La Corona Volcano and the Malpaís de La Corona, we will head towards the Jameos del Agua.

This set of caves is part of an impressive system of volcanic tunnels and galleries that originated during the island’s historic volcanic eruptions. The most outstanding feature of Jameos del Agua is its collapsed volcanic cave, which was formed when the roof of a lava tube collapsed, creating a unique underground space.

This cave of unquestionable beauty was designed by the renowned artist and architect César Manrique, we can see the efforts he made to preserve and highlight the natural beauty of the place by mixing nature, architecture and art. To this end, elements such as natural lighting, native vegetation and local materials were used to enhance the beauty of the place. At this point of the tour we will stop to appreciate an Aloe Vera plantation, a typical plant of the Canary Islands. Not only will we discover the many medicinal and aesthetic properties of this plant during the tour of the Aloe Museum, but we will also taste the plant.

We will return through the villages of Mala and Guatiza, admiring the cactus plantations that give shelter to the cochineal, used as a natural dye.

It was an amazing north tour. We were picked up on time. I really loved the huge caves and the pool in the Jameos del Agua and, of course, the spectacular views from the Mirador del Río. Great day all in all!
