The birdwatching in Fuerteventura is ever-increasing demand by birdwatching lovers. As we told you in the post about the Birdwatching in Lanzarote , the island of Fuerteventura is another gem that give the opportunity to watch species of great interest.
Fuerteventura has 10 places that denominated SPA (Special Protection Area). The most importants are: Jandía, Playa del Matorral, Pozo Negro, Llanos y Cuchillos de Antigua, Betancuria, Lajares y Esquinzo, Vallebrón and Dunas de Corralejo.
The Cabildo (the island council) and the association SEO/BirLife are betting for the birdwatching. In recent years they have put informative panels to make easier the birdwatching in some places like the bird reserver El Jarde. This is a symbolic place to watch birds of different species. Thanks to the panels we could identify the different species, among them the Canary Island stonechat, the Berthelot’s pipit or, with no doubt the star of this area, the houbara bustard. This is a bird that lives in the plains of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and attract attention during mating because of the way the male opens up its wings.
In Fuerteventura you will find different places with wetland or ponds that are very important to the birdwatching. Some examples are: Las Peñitas, La Presa de los Molinos or las Parcelas. These areas are the preferred by the migratory birds that stop in the island in their spring and autumn migrations.
Another place chosen by birdwatchers is the Saladar de Jandia. There the wide range of wildlife is obvious and it could be appreciated by the numerous species that we find there. Among all of them are the great grey shrike, the trumpeter finch, the Sardinian warbler, the Canary Islands stonechat, the lesser short-toed lark, the whimbrel, the ruddy turnstone… And also migratory birds like the grey heron, the black-winged stilt, the cattle egret and many others. A place full of wildlife that is considered one of the best wetland of the Canary Islands and it is included in the Ramsar list (the list of wetlands of international importance.)
And, of course, if we talk about birds of Fuerteventura we must talk about the Egyptian vulture. It is a bird of prey and scavenger that also has a cultural importance in the island. The Egyptian vulture population in Fuerteventura is the most southern of the European Union. This bird is beneficial for people because is a scavenger, so this bird feeds on dead animals. In this way the Egyptian vulture avoids the spread of disease and the water pollution.
As you can sense, Fuerteventura is a perfect island for birds lovers. A wide range of birds that will make your bird watching day a unique experience and unforgettable.
