If your cruise ship dock there and you want to enjoy the beaches, take note, you will make the most of your time.
Depart from Puerto del Rosario direction to Costa Calma by the road FV-2. This place has many beaches and are situated in the south-east of Fuerteventura. The Costa Calma beach, of two kilometres of white sand and turquoise waters, invite to to take a dip and relax there, but the route must continue. Less than twenty minutes from there we find Sotavento beach, its nine kilometres of beach are breathtaking. An authentic paradise that has different beaches in one. It is divided in five areas: La Barca, Risco del Paso, Mirador, Malnombre and Los Canarios. In some areas its crystal shallow waters make you walk a lot to separate your feet from the floor. Hardly ever it is overcrowded and it is an important place to practice windsurf and kitesurf.
With no doubt, it would be difficult to continue the route and leave this oasis back, but there are other places that will surprise you.
Continue direction to Morro Jable to visit Matorral beach, a perfect place to practice suva diving. Almost from every part of the beach is possibñe to see the lighthouse of Morro Jable, it makes the distinction from the nudist part. Just in front of the lighthouse is ”Veril Grande” (the big shelf), it is an ecological awareness area that is frequented by divers because it is accessible from land. Only 200 metres away is ”Veril Chico” (the small shelf) where is only possible access by boat. For beginners and experts it is a perfect place to practice this sport, the seabed of the area is amazing.
And it is almost time to have lunch, do you want limpet with mojo sauce? Take direction to El Puertito, in the Punta de Jandía and there you will have the opportunity to have something accompanied with the sound of the gentle lapping of the ocean wave. Now that you are there, go to the southernmost tip of Fuerteventura and visit the lighthouse of Punta de Jandía. It started to work in 1864 and inside it has an exhibition about the seabeds of the area and about the cetacean that live there: zifios, cachalotes and calderones.
Without get held up, we take the road to Cofete beach, always taking care because it is not a paved road. Before we go down to the beach there is a lay-by where is the Degollada Agua Oveja viewpoint. From there, if we have luck and it is not cloudy, we will have a great view of Cofete.
This unspoilt place amaze due to both its dimensions and the the massif that surround the beach. In this massif is the highest mountain of Fuerteventura. The Cofete beach has been considered the best European beach in different online surveys.
The highlighted places of this area are: the Winter’s house, the cemetery or the Roque del Moro, although what attract many visitors is the diversity of animals species and the endemic and abnormal plants.
We take a quick deep to cool off and it is time to go back to Puerto del Rosario. We know that it would be a short visit but we ensure you that you will enjoy this paradisiacal corner of the Canary Islands. You alway have the opportunity to return and enjoy a more relaxed and longer stay. Fuerteventura worth it.
