Lanzarote is a curious island in every sense. In August we can enjoy an experience that we could not see in other part of the world. We mean the traditional harvest. In the island the grapes harvest is the first in Europe.
So, the area of La Geria is the main protagonist this month. This is the vineyard per excellent of Lanzarote and where we can find almost all the wineries. Its main attraction is the way the peasants cultivate the grapes: they dig holes that reach up to 2 meters deep. So the harvest must be done manually and carefully, making this harvest unique in the world.
The 15th of August takes places the main harvest festivity in la Geria, in which the peasants do demonstrations about how the harvest was done in the past and how it continues today. This demonstration attracts every year lot of curious tourist and visitors who go there to see this beautiful and deep-rooted tradition. The peasants together with the camels do harvest and carry the vintage to the winery where the start with the wine production process.
Although the harvest begins at the end of July, not all varieties are collected at the same time since each one has a different ripening time. The first variety to be harvested is usually the volcanic malvasia, which is the first to reach the point of adequate maturation. It is followed by the different varieties of Listán white and black and syrah. The later varieties are the diego and muscatel, with which the sweetest wines are made on the island.
