Lobos Island is located in the northeast of Fuerteventura, is Known as “estrecho de la Bocaina”. It name is in honor of Sea lions that lived in it coast years ago. The highest mountain is “La Caldera” with 127 metres and the island has 4,5km².
The island has 6 km² of surface and around 13 km of coastline. The island is clearly visible from corralejo, and in clear day from the south coast of Lanzarote. In 1982 has been officially declared as a “Natural Park of Lobos Island” and from January of 2019 the access to the island is limited. 400 people per day divided in morning and afternoon shifts to minimize the environmental impact produced for the massive tourism that visited the island everyday.
To come into the island you must request a compulsory leave that can be booked 3 days in advance. Leave can be requested for up to 3 people and you must choose the visiting time: Mornings (from 10am to 2pm) or in the Afternoons (from 2pm to 6pm).
If you are a nature lover this island will be your paradise. You will have the opportunity to do different activities. Its crystal clear waters invite you to practise snorkel and these sea beds are declared marine reserve and their have a great ecological wealth. The island has 2 swimming areas: La Concha y El Puertito. With a snorkel kit you can see funny flock of fishes, the famous “vieja” and if you are lucky maybe some starfish. We assure you that you will not want to get out of the water!
If you like hiking this island is also for you. It has a circular route with great signposted where you will discover the most curious corners in about 8 km of walk. On your way you will find small beaches, the Martiño lighthouse that was inhabited until 1968 by a lighthouse keeper, or you can climb to the top of the mountain “La Caldera”. From here the views are spectacular!
It has more than 130 plant species and several species of birds, among which Hering gull, Houbara bustard and Cory´s shearwater. As you can see this small island has everything to spend a day in contact with nature.
