WINE ROUTE
Talking about Lanzarote is talking about La Geria, the place par excellence of the wines of the island. It is situated in the centre-southwest of the island, in the municipality of Yaiza, and was a very productive field where the main crop was cereal. But with the volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736 everything was covered by the lava. After this period the farmers had a cunning plan, as they started to dig holes in the volcanic ash reaching the fertile land. In this holes they planted vines, protected from the usual wind on the island.
With this farm way unique in the world due to the effort of the farmers and winegrowers, La Geria has become a stamp of identity of the island, and also in the ideal stage to make a wine route in Lanzarote, visiting different wineries and tasting surprising flavours.
In fact, the wines from this original landscape are among the best wines of Canary Islands. The climate, the features of the land and the capacity of the “rofe” or “picón” (volcanic sand) to keep the moisture during the night are the secrets to make some of the best wines of the islands. TYPES OF WINES
White wines:
It is the volcanic malvasía. Perfectly adapted to the climate conditions of the island, the malvasía is a local variety of white grape with a light aromatic touch. The quality of the grape and its flavour with a hint of “volcanic acidity” is the distinguishing feature of this famous wine in Lanzarote. There are different kinds of the malvasía wine like medium sweet or dry.
Sweet wines:
It is the moscatel from Alejandría, with grapes of a late budding. After the harvest and a long maturation to keep the necessary sugar, the grapes are dried for many days.
Pink wines:
This wine is usually made with the variety of grape “listán negro”. It is a very tasty wine and normally with a hint of fruit flavour.
Red wines:
Depending on the time that the wine stay in barrels and bottles, is classified in the categories of: young wines, aged wines, reserve and great reserve wines.
Also, besides the wine tasting always accompanied by Lanzarote cheese and crackers, the stop in the different and picturesque wineries, from the oldest to the most recent, allow us to know more about cultivation processes, collecting and the transformation of grapes, also all about the traditional machinery that participate in this process: wood presses, stone winepresses, alquitars or even pumps and the machines which crushes the grapes which date from nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
