Trailhead
The route starts from the village of Mancha Blanca. Take the road that goes to the National Park of Timanfaya and 2 km away from the Visitors Center we will find a narrow path that is well marked. This path takes us to a parking area.
From there we start the hiking route. It is over 11 km there and back. The path is signposted and go by lava fields. The first part of the route we border the Caldereta volcano that is just before the Caldera Blanca and smaller than it. Continue the path and when we arrive to Caldera Blanca we take the path on the left to get to the slope of the volcano. There we follow the path that climb to the highest point of the crater. It is located at 458 metres above sea level. Once you are on the top you can border the crater to get amazing views, it is an experience that is highly recommended. But try to do it a windless day!

From the top you can see all the caldera. Its diameter is just over 1.10km. The slope is easy but take care to do not slip and fall on the volcanic rocks.
In our route we will see lava fields that even though they are not the best substratum for plants to survive, some vegetation has spread all over the area. It is easy to find lichen in the whole area because they are able to survive in harsh conditions like there. There are lichens of different colours and survive, among other things, thanks to the alisios wind that are loaded with humidity.
Make this trekking in the afternoon will give you the opportunity to enjoy sunset while you descend the mountain. It is spectacular see the sun sets among the lava fields. It would be probably a view that you will never forget.
Some tips for the route:
- Wear comfortable and suitable shoes, trekking boots or hard-soled shoes. If your shoes have protection to avoid ankle sprain it would be better (you are going to walk onto lava fields and volcanic rocks.)
- Bring enough water, because there is not possibility to get it on the route.
- Hat or cap, sunglasses and sun cream.
- And willing to discover the charms of Lanzarote!!
